Serving food to homeless people in Downtown Indianapolis
On October 12th, 2024, I volunteered to serve homeless people a meal in Indianapolis.
Overview
-
Overall, I had a great time volunteering. I was very nervous and anxious at first because I got there a little too early and did not know where to go. Once I met the leaders of the event, I felt more comfortable. I felt very good about this experience because I knew I helped those in need.
-
My initial experience was going to be to shadow a Dietitian. After reaching out to several people, it became obvious I would not be able to gain that experience. I decided to change my experience to serve food for homeless people. In my hometown, I would take extra food to the shelter, but I never had the opportunity to serve a mass amount of people. I expected to be nervous about volunteering. I also expected to feel very happy after I completed my experience.
-
I want to write about the woman who warned me about a man with a knife in detail. I want to write about the diversity of the people and their reactions to the volunteers helping out. I would like to write about how three churches pitch in to make it possible to serve food every other Saturday.
-
My favorite part of the experience was how I left after all of the food was gone. Knowing that I helped impact the homeless peoples lives in a positive way made me very happy.
Notes from my experience

Steve was the head of the operation on October 12th.
3 churches are involved with this operation. They have been serving food for 20 consecutive years. 7 people from the New Pal church make all of the hot food on their own.
Quotes from a homeless man
- "Is there going to be anything but bananas, I need something hot."
- "Can you give me a pass to cut the line, I don't want to wait back there"
Scary moment
- A woman who was volunteering came up to me and another woman and said, "If anything happens here get out and just leave. There is a guy with a knife and people are getting upset others are cutting. If something happens run to your car and leave."
